How To Drive a Golf Ball : Gold is a game of the mind, not just the body. Often time’s people forget to think when they are going through the motions of hitting a ball off a tee. You may be a beginner or you may have some experience in this regard, but in the end, you will need to consider a few steps on how to drive a golf ball better. Whether you want distance, or you want precision, there’s a balancing act that should not be forgotten as you play the game and start to gain traction with the holes that you are trying to get to. The following steps will help you with not only getting the ball driven far, it will help with improving your mindset, moving forward.
Picking The Right Club
Before you do anything, make absolutely sure that you pick the right club. If you do not pick up the right club, you are going to miss out on something huge. It’s very important that you look at what you have and seek out a driver. The drivers that you see in stores and professionals using on television are very much the same that you want to get. Do not try to hit the opening shot or drive a ball far without one. Seek out a lofted driver and get one that fits your body style. Even if you rent all the other clubs, you want to have a customized solution for the driver. This will allow you to have a full range of motion, and will definitely be well worth your time and effort.
Work on Your Stance
Before you set up your ball, make sure that you work on your stance. Take your time with this, and make sure that you’re practicing just the stance. You need to do this because you want to ensure that you recognize several points of your body’s movements. First, relax, and allow your shoulders to set in, while you step into a stance, holding the club with your hands, a bit loosely. Think of a pendulum here, as you will be the weighted fulcrum that will move back and swing forward, shifting balance and throwing weight and kinetic energy from your body’s movements through the ball, lifting it and carrying it to the proper levels. Just work on the stance and notice how your body moves slightly, shifts appropriately, and is ready for the swinging motion. Make it a sort of meditative thing, because you will absolutely need it.
The Grip Matters
Some people think that you should just be loose and let the grip dictate your energy, but that’s a bad idea. Too loose of a grip will cost your swing to shift over the club to fly out of your hands. Your hands should not be gripping with increasing strength, but rather a mid-level grip that allows you to squeeze just enough to ensure that the energy transfer from your motion is not stifled in your backswing. You want to crush the ball with the driver, not your hands or the shaft of the club. This will take some getting used to, but it’s not at all impossible. Consider a few practice swings and see where your grip is at. If it’s too tight, you’ll know it, and if it’s too loose you will feel the club wanting to pass through your fingers, so be careful.
The Swinging Pendulum
Thinking about the pendulum metaphor we talked about earlier, start your downswing with a calming effect. Imagine a tower’s bell being hit with a log of sorts, and calmly flow through the downswing with the purpose of a tightening gear or a spring. You will not draw energy here, you are going to be doing so in the next step. As you move your swing forward, gain some speed, and be careful at where you’re angling your arms.
One arm should be stead, the other should have a slight bend with an angle that forms a right triangle alongside your body. If you can do this, you will have a powerful edge on the swing, but alongside that, make sure that you lead the club towards the ground. The club should follow through a straight line as it engages power through the ball, through the contact as you flow energy towards your backswing and forward motion.
At the point of impact, do not curve your hands, or follow through the temptation to pull your wrists a bit. You have to stay steady to generate power and stay strong through the follow through. The angle will allow you to hit with the precision needed to go far, and if you keep your power steady, you will not pop up the ball, but rather hit it with power to go far.
On the follow up, make sure that you swing your body and shoulders with the club going over you’re the body and upwards. Like a baseball player stepping through the bat, you want to have your swing follow up over your shoulder. As for your legs and stance, you want one leg steady while you swivel your hips ever so slightly to pull the energy through the right triangle created by your arms.

Take your time, and make sure that you practice your grip, stance, and follow through away from the tee. Do not chop, do not overthink, and do not try to hook the ball at the end of your swing. One way to get used to the power transfer is to take a baseball bat and try to practice the pendulum shift that is required for the actual swing. You need to pay attention to your shoulders, and how your arms shift power.
